My definition of Mass Media

Mass Media is a difficult concept to explain. However, my idea of Mass Media is anything made by someone or a group of people to either persuade or entertain the public. Examples of this can be seen everywhere, when you turn on the television you find tv programs meant to entertain you mixed in with commercials meant to persuade you to buy their product. Radios have radio shows and music to help us get through our day, but they still have commercials as well. It is not as black and white as I am making out to be. In one way or another, everything in the media is meant to persuade and change us. For example, while we watch our television programs, we fall victim to product placement and other types of sneeky advertising. Companies do this because they know the population wants to be like what they see on tv. In the end Mass Media can be a good thing, it can help us relax after a hard day at work or make us laugh when we are feeling down. We just have to remember to be independent and not copy everything we see in the media...because not all of it is good.

  1. Good insight to our need to be like (better yet mimic) the celebs portrayed in the media. Media is everywhere. I like the simplistic definition you give to this sometimes over-complex industry.

  2. I agree with you. Mass media is nice and dandy, because without it providing us with information, we would be as primitive cavemen. However, the media can abuse their power and manipulate our beliefs on certain issues, simply by the way the story is told.
