Ads and College Students

A lot of Ads are directed at a younger audience, more specifically, college students.  A couple of examples that come to mind are 5 hour energy and Axe body sprays.  They have two different ways of attracting the younger demographic to their product. 5 hour energy uses the fact that there is not enough hours in the day and that college students are constantly bombarded with school and work. They make it seem like no college student can make it through the day unless they have the wonderful product known as 5 hour energy. Axe uses the more popular method. Sex. Every single Ad that they I have seen about them is geared toward gettin me some. (pardon my French) My favorite slogan that they have is “how dirty boys get clean”. A lot of products do similar things, one that comes to mind is red bull. Not all, but several of their advertisements are very sexually suggestive in nature. These are just a few of the several products put in our face every day. Ads are necessary for us to know what is available to us, we just have to remember not to let ourselves believe everything we see on these commercials, We need to make sure to research things and not use things blindly.

Music Makers

Music is a wonderful thing and can be used as a powerful tool. I love music so much that I plan to immerse myself in it as a career as a radio personality. According to this assignment, I have to pick one genre of music and one band/musician as my favorite…the truth is…I can’t. Every genre of music is awesome in its own way (except country, country sucks :-P), and I love WAY too many bands too be able to pick just one. I am not very picky when it comes to music; it really depends on my mood, or the situation. My Pandora’s variety is so expansive it’s ridiculous. I have everything from Skrillex radio, to Michael Jackson radio, to Queen radio, to Ludacris radio, to Steven Lynch radio, the list goes on and on. I listen to it almost constantly. When I’m in a car, it’s time for Skrillex radio. When I’m cleaning my dorm, I like to have a little 80’s montage music. When I’m training in my studio, I put on some Ludacris or Eminem. Even right now as I write this paper, I’m jamming to some The Lonely Island (their hilarious). So I hope this blog is acceptable for my teacher, cause I honestly can’t pick a single genre or artist. And if you’ve never experienced music, you should try it…it’s pretty awesome.

The Film that Shaped my World part II

I accidently made another post of the same assignment...:-/ but here it is:

It’s a tough choice, but the film that effected who I am in life most, and this might seem a little silly, is Mortal Kombat. The reason I picked this particular film is how it has stayed with me from childhood till now. I used to watch this movie all the time with my dad. He always wanted to take some sort of martial art with me, but he couldn’t because of the injuries to his back. We would watch this movie and go out in the yard and play fight and what-not. It isn’t the best martial arts movie out there but it is what got me started on it. It also started me on being the gamer that I am now. The first Mortal Kombat game came out in 1992, the same year I was born, and I grew up playing them and getting my butt kicked on them. :-P Within the last year, they released a new a new Mortal Kombat that redid the whole series…and trust me, I had it the day it came out. Mortal Kombat started my love of martial arts and started my love of video games, it is a big reason I am the laid back nerd that I am now. This is why I picked this film to be the film that shaped my world.

The film that shaped my world

It is hard to look at all of the films that I have ever watched and pick just one that has shaped my world more than any other. It took a long time of contemplation before I realized that I couldn't pick just one, that's why I decided to go with the entire Star Wars saga. I truly believe that this movie series has effected my life and many lives like mine. It might not have the strongest message and it may be meant to mainly entertain us, but who really cares? It did it's job. I believe this movie is important to me because I grew up a Jehovah's Witness and was not able to watch very many T.V. shows or movies. My mom even threw away the Wizard of Oz when I was a kid, because it had magic in it. :-P but for some reason, my family loved Star Wars...I know right? but I wasn't  about to argue. The point that I am trying to make is that these movies were kinda my outlet to normality when I was younger and they are partially responsible for making me the nerdy, force loving guy that I am today.

Today's News Source

Being a 19 year old guy, I don't find the news quite as entertaining as my grandparents. But whether I like it or not, news is an extremely important aspect of daily life in society. Even if it is just from word of mouth. Choosing where to get your information on the news is very important. I honestly don't mind where I get the news from, as long as it is not Fox. Fox news has gained a bad reputation for...twisting their stories for their own personal gain. The most important time to be smart about your news is anytime their is an election. This is the only time I will try to watch several different news sources. The reason behind this is that Fox is republican, while NBC and CBS are democratic. If you pay attention during election season you can start to see little lies and half-truths from both sides. The only way to cut through to the truth is to watch both sides of the debates and use your own deductive reasoning to come to a conclusion. In any case, just be smart about your news.

Independent Post #1: Kamicon

Not this weekend, but next weekend, I will be setting sail toward Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Is it because of my love of the Crimson Tide? Heck no! (GO DAWGS) It is because of the 4th Annual Kamicon convention. What is Kamicon, you ask? It is the equivalent of Comic-con in San Diego, except it isn't limited to only comic books. You are encouraged to come to Kamicon and chat and hang out with fellow lovers of...well anything nerdy. (comic books, animes, video games, exec.) A good friend of mine is going to be selling her art at the convention, so I am going to support her. This is my first time and I am really excited about it...I didn't even know it existed until about a month ago. Why did I bring this up? The answer is simple, every that this event is celebrating is about...that's right, MASS MEDIA! Even though this is a celebration of nerdism, it all comes from some source of media: books, television, movies, games...and that's why it's so cool to me! Everyone who lays eyes on this post has seen something from some sort of media and said, "Man, I wish I could (do / be like) that" but you where too afraid to because of what people might say. Well, this is the chance, dress how you wanna and act how you wanna without the fear of prying judging eyes. I'm am gonna let my inner nerd out as you can see at the bottom, my friend is even going as the pyramid head from the silent hill games...(I hope he can pull it off). But in any case, I am very excited about next weekend, and I thought it would make a good example of how Mass Media plays a role in my life. Thank you for reading! :-)

My definition of Mass Media

Mass Media is a difficult concept to explain. However, my idea of Mass Media is anything made by someone or a group of people to either persuade or entertain the public. Examples of this can be seen everywhere, when you turn on the television you find tv programs meant to entertain you mixed in with commercials meant to persuade you to buy their product. Radios have radio shows and music to help us get through our day, but they still have commercials as well. It is not as black and white as I am making out to be. In one way or another, everything in the media is meant to persuade and change us. For example, while we watch our television programs, we fall victim to product placement and other types of sneeky advertising. Companies do this because they know the population wants to be like what they see on tv. In the end Mass Media can be a good thing, it can help us relax after a hard day at work or make us laugh when we are feeling down. We just have to remember to be independent and not copy everything we see in the media...because not all of it is good.
